Designing Indian wedding attires with a contemporary twist

FashionDesigning Indian wedding attires with a contemporary twist

A child actor till a few years ago, Masumi Mewawalla’s fascination with designing clothes began in 2014 when she set out to make a ‘statement saree’ for her mother. It was for a special occasion, a gift for her mother on her parent’s anniversary.  Her next venture in designing was to re-do her mother’s wardrobe. The encouraging response and appreciation she received for her work soon resulted in her taking up fashion designing full-time. The 23-year-old designer launched her signature label, Pink Peacock Couture a year back. Her zeal for designing gorgeous garments comes from her deep rooted love for fashion designing.  The highlight of her collection is a beautiful line of wedding attires for the contemporary bride and her entourage. She uses stylish colour combinations like beige paired with red, pastel blue juxtaposed with blush pink, and so much more. Beautifully crafted designs flaunt intricate embroidery and traditional zardosi and gota work that totally captivate your attention.

In a phone conversation with Guardian 20, she talks about her latest designs.

Q. Do you think nowadays, young women are more conscious about their wedding designs?

A. Yes, the designs are for the young and vibrant women with a tinch of ethnic embroidery highlighting the beauty of the garment yet keeping Indo western silhouettes. The designs are more of lehenga choli, capes , pre-stitched sarees, draped tunics etc. Her collection comes complete with celebratory hues of red, pink, scarlet, blue and more. It is the quintessential bridal line woven with a modern spin. It is also for the young and vibrant women with a tinch of ethnic embroidery highlighting the beauty of the garment yet keeping Indo western silhouettes.. Our forte lies in the creation of bridal couture, seamlessly weaving together the best fabrics that are handpicked, along with additional embellishments like swarovski crystals and other bespoke elements.

Masumi Mewawalla. Q. How are your designs different from the contemporary ones?

A. Bridal designs are on rich fabrics like silks and velvet with placements of traditional zardosi work and diamond work giving the entire bridal feel to the outfit, the other contemporary designs are more on the modern and I also do western patterns. Every piece of apparel that is conceptualized by us is crafted with love and a rigid attention to detail. We believe in craftsmanship that transcends age and time, giving you the outfit of your dreams. Our in-house team of expert karigars from different parts of India, add their personal touch of magic to all styles created. We believe in keeping the art of traditional craftsmanship alive, in order to use the grandeur of the yesteryears across our new age designs of today.

Q. Who are your customers?

 A. Every bride to be is definitely a target customer and  to give them the best is my only motive.

 Q. How do you define your wedding collection?

A. My wedding collection this season is of silks and velvets in pastel  colour as it is still the bride’s favourite colour palate with rose gold embroidery and zardosi work with Swarovski touch ups. Our collections are symbolic of a fairytale, as we adopt the use of ruffled nets, intricate embroidery and fabrics that add a dash of royalty to anyone who choses to wear it. From lehengas to gowns and men’s suits to sarees, expect to find a range of mesmerizing designs to suit every style and need.  I believe in ‘Inspired by Love, Made with Love, We believe you deserve to look beautiful, Everytime ,Everyday, Everywhere Feel Beautiful.’

Q. What are your future plans?

A. I will soon be launching a bag collection and looking at becoming one of the most preferred Bridal Designer. At 23 today having a year old brand with increasing number of clients, I already feel that I will be growing ahead in my life.
