The thirteenth Auto Expo got over earlier this week and saw a record number of footfalls. Over 6 lakh people visited the biennial event where more than 80 new vehicles were unveiled. Amongst them were a host of new 2—wheelers and that included everything from powerful scooters to futuristic concepts. Here ‘s a read on some that stood out amongst the crowd.        

Honda Navi

With the Navi, Honda 2—wheelers launched a completely new category of product at the Auto Expo. It’s the Japanese company’s answer to solving woes of urban commuters who travel short distances. With the Navi, Honda is also targeting the youth who’re looking at an affordable and fun to ride 2—wheeler. The Navi runs on a 110 cc single cylinder engine that gives a maximum power of 7.8 bhp. The automatic gearbox engine will be laden with the more fuel efficient Honda eco technology or HET. It has a small fuel tank of 3.8 litres and reaches a top speed of 81 kmph. The Navi was launched at an initial price of Rs. 39,500 (ex—showroom, Delhi)

Triumph Bonneville range

British bike maker Triumph launched its most affordable bike in India, the Bonneville in a new range.  All these bikes now come with more powerful engines and revised frames. The most affordable bike in the range is the Street Twin that comes with features like switchable ABS and traction control. It comes with a 900 cc twin cylinder engine that gives 54 bhp and 80 Nm of toque. Next is the Bonneville T 120 which gets a twin pod instrument cluster and LED DRLs. The bike is powered by a twin—cylinder 1200 cc motor and comes with multiple riding modes. Finally, the Thruxton R café racer is the most powerful of the three. It also runs on 1200 cc engine and has a 6—speed transmission. It also comes with Brembo disc brakes and Pirelli Diablo RossaCorsatyres.

UM Motorcycles

American bike maker UM motorcycles made its India debut at the Auto Expo. 3 new cruiser bikes were launched by the company in India. It started with the Renegade Commando which is powered by a 279 cc single cylinder water cooled engine that gives a maximum power output of 25 bhp. The Commando is priced at Rs. 1.59 lacs (ex—showroom, Delhi). The other 2 bikes launched by UM at the Expo were the renegade Sport and the Renegade Classic. While the former is priced at Rs. 1.49 lacs, the latter will set you back by Rs. 1.69 lacs. Both these cruisers come with electric start and a 6—speed synchronized mesh. The company has announced that it will start with 50 dealerships across the country.

Suzuki

Suzuki 2 —wheelers unveiled a new avatar of their Access, their 125 cc scooter. The updated Access has the longest seat in the segment and the company boasts of the largest under seat storage area that also comes with a charging socket. Some other features on the new Access include a one—push starter, service indicator and a lighter frame to ensure better mileage.Suzuki also presented its popular 150cc bike the Gixxer laded with updated features. The company has made some worthy additons to the bike. While the naked Gixxernow has a rear disc brake, the Gixxer SF Moto GP edition now comes with get fuel injection. The 153 cc engine however remains the same on both these bikes.

TVS Akula

TVS Motor Company showcased the Akula concept. The Akula is built using aluminium and carbon fibre body, and features a 310cc, singe—cylinder engine. The same engine also powers the BMW G310R, which has been jointly developed by TVS and BMW. The Akula won many fans at the Expo purely because of its design. The name Akula has been inspired from Akula grade submarines which in Russian, mean the shark.

DSK Benelli

The Italian superbike maker, Benelli had an imprssive display at the Auto Expo. It unveiled a total of 4 motorcycles, two of which will target mass—segment the TNT 135 and Tornado 302. The other 2 bikes are the BX 250 and the TRK 502, which looks the most exciting of the lot. Addition of these 4 bikes will take the total number of Benelli bikes in India to 10.

Hero Motocorp

Hero unveiled a new 200cc naked sport motorcycle, Xtreme 200 S at the Auto Expo that will rival products like KTM Duke 200 and TVS Apache RTR 200. It also announced to launch the Splendor iSmart 110 in coming months. The ismart is the first ever bike developed in house by the country’s largest bike maker. Finally, the company also showed the production ready 250cc bike, the HX250R at the motor show.
