Political uncertainty hits J&K local polls

NewsPolitical uncertainty hits J&K local polls

With Governor’s Rule in place, there is a growing chance of deferment of the proposed urban local body elections and also the Panchayat elections in Jammu and Kashmir.  If these elections are not conducted on time, the funds under the 14th Finance Commission will not be released to the state. The PDP-BJP coalition government had also prepared to conduct the panchayat polls in J&K in June-July to ensure the flow of funds that are needed for the completion of various pending projects.

State Chief Electoral Officer Shant Manu told the media that they were ready with the updated electoral list and have already segregated the rural and urban electoral rolls.

He said that they were ready for conducting the urban polls on time and were waiting for the new Chief Minister to assume office.
