Since its launch in 2001, the Ishara International Puppet Theatre Festival — a one-of-its-kind forum in India for popularising the art of puppetry — has brought together puppeteers, artists and performers from around the globe to celebrate storytelling through puppetry. Alongside the best talent India has to offer, over 100 international puppetry companies have participated in the festival through the years, including those coming from the UK, Belgium, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Spain, Turkey, Brazil, Sweden, Norway, Israel, Iran, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Taiwan, Japan, Afghanistan, Ireland, Australia, Switzerland and the USA.
The latest edition of the festival — which is into its 14th chapter now — features puppet artists from Egypt, Iran, Afghanistan, Russia, Italy and Sweden among other places. Puppet shows made in both modern and traditional forms of puppetry, featuring everything from rod to string puppets, as well as mixed performances with dance, theatre and music are among the highlights of this year’s festival.
The festival — being hosted at the India Habitat Centre, Delhi; Epicentre, Gurgaon; and Tagore Theatre, Chandigarh — ends on 14 February
