Auto Expo 2016: Where cars take centrestage

The thirteenth Auto began earlier this week with a slew of car and bike unveils. There were cars for the masses and there were bikes for the enthusiasts and there was everything in between. Here’s what major Industry players did at the Auto Expo this time around.

Maruti Suzuki

Country’s largest car maker Maruti revealed their much awaited compact SUV the Vitara Brezza at the Expo. The Brezza will be launched sometime next month in the market. Initially it will be offered only in a Diesel avatar. Maruti also unveiled two concepts, the small hatch Ignis and a more spruced up Baleno, the Baleno RS at the show.

Hyundai

The Korean car maker revealed the all-new Tucson at the Expo. Some design cues on the Tucson remind you of the Santa Fe which include the hexagonal grille and swept back headlamps. The Tucson will be launched in the market before the year ends. Hyundai also presented HND, a sub 4-meter SUV as well as its the luxury brand Genesis at the Expo.

Honda & Toyota

Two much awaited 7-seater vehicles were revealed by the two Japanese car makers at the show. While Honda got the BR-V, Toyota unveiled the new generation of their popular car, the Innova, called the Innova Crysta. Both the cars will be launched later this year.

Mahindra

Mahindra revealed the Aero, a new concept based on their flagship car, the XUV 500. The Aero is an attempt to give the SUV a coupe like shape. It’s got some radical design elements include suicide doors for easy ingress.

The biggest stall at the Expo this time belonged to Tata Motors and probably the biggest lineup of new products also belonged to the Indigenous car maker. Tata revealed the Kite5, a compact sedan based on the soon to be renamed hatch Zica. In addition, they also launched a mini-SUV concept called Nexon, as well as Hexa, a full sized SUV having good off-road capabilities.

General Motors

Chevrolet India unveiled two new concepts based on their Beat hatch at the Expo. The Beat Activ is a crossover version of the Beat while the Beat Essentia, is a compact sedan. Both these cars when launched will run on the same 1.0 litre 56 bhp diesel and 1.2 litre 77 bhp petrol engines that power the Beat.

Tata Motors

The biggest stall at the Expo this time belonged to Tata Motors and probably the biggest lineup of new products also belonged to the Indigenous car maker. BMW

The German Luxury car maker launched two new cars at the Auto Expo. A new generation of its flagship sedan, the 7-series, was launched at a starting price of Rs. 1.1 crore. The new 7 will be seen with some path breaking features and will take on the Mercedes S-Class in the market. BMW also unveiled the new X1 at the Expo.

Mercedes

BMW’s rival Mercedes went one step further and got three new vehicles at the Expo. First was the GLC an SUV version of the C-class luxury sedan. The specialty of the GLC is that it comes with different driving modes, namely Eco, Comfort, Sport and Individual. The luxury car maker also revealed the S-class Cabriolet and the Maybach S 600 guard at the motor show.

Jeep

The big muscle American SUV maker Jeep entered India at the Expo by unveiling two new cars. The Jeep Cherokee SRT and Jeep Wrangler Unlimited will hit the market later this year. In addition, Jeep also announced it will make a more affordable vehicle in India in 2017.

Audi & Nissan

Finally, two fantastic sportscars were unveiled at the Auto Expo by these two companies. The new R8 V10 plus and the Nissan GT-R had the audiences drooling over them once they were revealed on the opening day of the show.
