Mahant Dharamdas, the main Hindu litigant in the case, says the Centre’s plea in Supreme Court is wrong and unjustified.

NEW DELHI: The Sunday Guardian spoke to Mahant Dharamdas, the main Hindu litigant in the Babri Masjid-Ram Janmabhoomi case. Dharamdas believes that the plea submitted by the Centre to the Supreme Court is wrong and unjustified. Excerpts:

Q: The Centre has submitted a petition in the Supreme Court that the excess 67 acres of land be returned to the Ram Janmabhoomi Nyas trust. How do you view this development?

A: This is totally wrong and unjustified. The entire property belongs to only and only Ram Lalla and nobody else. It cannot be given to anybody, neither any organisation or any party for the construction of the temple in the excess land. The temple will be constructed only where Ram Lalla is sitting today as that is exactly where Lord Ram was born.

Q: But the Centre has said that the excess land belonged to the Ram Janmabhoomi Nyas and it should be given back to them. Why should there be an objection on that?

A: The Ram Janmabhoomi Nyas trust is an outfit of the VHP (Vishwa Hindu Parishad). What legal status do they have in this case? Who are they? They are not even party to the case. Why should the land be given to them? The government is trying to do an eyewash by making such announcements that we will build the temple at the adjoining land, etc. This plea will be rejected by the court. The entire property belongs to Lord Ram. This is a conspiracy being done by the VHP.

Q: Do you think an out-of-court or a mutual solution is possible in this matter anymore?

A: I do not see any possibility of any mutual or out-of-court settlement in the case now. Nobody is ready to listen to the other party, where is the point of an out-of-court settlement? The Allahabad High Court, as well as the Supreme Court, had asked for mutual solution, but nothing could be achieved. Unless and until the decision comes from the court now and the court decides and makes up its mind to give a decision, I do not see a solution to this problem.

Q: It is being repeatedly said that the Congress is “deliberately” trying to delay the hearing in this case in court. What do you have to say to this?

A: Yes, it is the Congress which has delayed this entire process, or else the decision on the Babri Masjid-Ram Janmabhoomi case would have come way back in May or June last year. But Congress leaders like Kapil Sibal and others repeatedly caused delay by using diversionary tactics in court. I would say all the political parties are playing politics over this, even the BJP is to be blamed here, they only know to talk, but does not do anything.

Q: How soon is the verdict likely to be out in this case? And what are your expectations?

A: We cannot say any date, but we can only hope that this is resolved as soon as possible. I am very hopeful of the court because all hopes from the government has been shattered. And I am also hopeful that the land would be given to Ram Lalla because that land belongs to Ram Lalla; therefore nobody else, neither the Nirmohi Akhara nor the Sunni Waqf Board, can get it. They do not even have documents for the land.
